Mansion Del Angel, Quito

Quito is somewhat famous throughout Latin America for having the best-preserved colonial architecture around, and so it should have been no surprise to find that the Mansion del Angel boutique hotel’s building was just as impressive as any in the Old City.  Still, the sheer effort that has gone into making this place as perfect as it is can be rather overwhelming – in the best possible way.

Being a boutique hotel, the rooms are all different shapes and sizes, but all beautifully decorated and incredibly comfortable.  There are four-poster beds in the suites, luxurious Persian-style carpets, wall paintings and furniture that has obviously been carefully selected to recreate the mansion as it once would have been.  In fact, it’s a little bit like staying in a National Trust property; albeit one that has been completely modernised and probably isn’t haunted.

The Mansion del Angel is on the cusp between the Old and New Cities in Quito, right next to the Parque Alameda, which is a great location in that it gets you away from both the hoards of tourists and the packs of foreign residents while allowing you easy access to the beauty and convenience of both.  It also gives you peace and quiet: not an easy thing to find in Quito.

On the practical side, all the rooms here are fully fitted out with safes, hairdryers in the bathrooms, cable TV if what’s happening outside isn’t interesting enough for you, purified water and very comfortable beds.  The hotel provides a laundry service, a full breakfast with the room price, and will organise trips and tours around the area for you.  You are indeed well and truly looked after in this hotel.

This is a properly high-end hotel, probably one of Quito’s finest; and the rooms here range from between $100 and $300 per night, depending on how fancy you would like your stay to be.  But as accommodation goes, it will probably be the best few hundred dollars you’ve ever spent, as hotels don’t come much better than this.
